Location: Warner Street, Islington
So you want to stage a major gas explosion in a London
Street. To complicate matters there isn’t any
legislation at the time to allow the closing of a road
for filming. And the shoot is set in the mid-Victorian
period so you can’t have any contemporary references
in shot.
First of all the right location was found with the
Roseberry Avenue viaduct providing not only an authentic
backdrop but a good vantage point for members of the
public who wanted to watch the filming whilst keeping
them out of harm’s way.
Secondly it was scheduled for an appropriate time – on
a Sunday – when there was least pressure on the
locale.
And finally the shoot was arranged so the road was
never closed; there was access for fire engines or
other emergency vehicles along the street at all times.
